GPS: Hackers and Stalkers Can Now Find You Via Your iPhone or Samsung

Media_httpwwwadsavvyo_ldcfg

Ralf-Philipp Weimann, of the University of Luxembourg, reported that your smart phone, iPhone 4, iPhone 5, iPad, or Samsung can be hacked remotely at the Black Hat computer security conference in Las Vegas Wed July 25th. If you unintentionally downloaded and installed software with malware in it, and use any GPS program like Foursquare or Google Maps, you're vulnerable.

It turns out that the process by which you cell phone communicates with GPS satelites is secure. But before it does, it uses insecure A-GPS with stands for assisted GPS. A-GPS is for your phone to communicate with your cell service provider to speed up the 12 minute satelite latency.

It's during this phase that your GPS coordinates can be leaked to an attacker. Hackers and Stalkers may not have known this until Ralf-Philipp Weimann revealed this vulnerability. Most in the audience were surprised. This vulnerability will persist until Apple and Android upgrade their operating systems and close the holes.
