You know the feeling. You prepare a bountiful feast and nobody shows up to dinner. It sucks. It wasn't always that way. Back when the Android Market first came out in 2008 on top of the G1 or with the iTunes store first came out, the story was, "if you build it, they will come."
So why is it that when you build an app or game, nobody downloads it anymore?
The simple but wrong answer is "competition."
Sure, there are almost 1,000,000 apps in the Google Play store now. and sure... there were only 40 or so apps in 2008. But that's not the reason.
The real reason all the apps in the early days took off like a rocket out of North Korea (maybe not a good anology) is that those 40 apps in the beginning got 100% of Google's $10,000,000 marketing push. That meant that if you had an early app in the Android Market, now, Google Play, it was as if Google spent $250,000 to drive people to your app or game.
The real reason is the Google or Apple Marketing Budget to Total App Count Ratio.
Now, what you need is a different strategy. In any mature environment where the haves and the haves nots / rich and the poor / the vested and the disenfranchised polarize big-time, to make a big splash, you need to team up and build alliances.
The best place to start is within an existing community like Android Developer Forums.
